Things you never knew existed — New bookofjoe feature premiers today

Look at the graphic above.

What do you see?

It's a LEGO brick separator.

A website says, "This tool makes it a snap to pull those small plates apart. Everyone needs one."

Stipulated — but where was this tool back in my salad/LEGO days?

$2.49.

Servus Joe,

My dentist loved the fact that LEGO sets pre-1987 did not come with this device. I visited him three times for breaking off my front teeth trying to separate those pesky bricks.

At least I can bite into a popsicle without suffering crippling pain. Life is a tradeoff sometimes...

Pax,

Jake

I stopped playing with 'LEGO (R) brand Bricks' (isn't this how the company demands they moronically be referred to???) back in '87 when my buddy Ed tried to faithfully recreate the Spaceball One. Haven't seen it? You should rent it. You'll see how moronic this was. It killed my spirit. The guy borrowed lego sets from EVERYONE to complete this and spent every waking moment trying to tear it apart and redesigning it for scale or otherwise...

They are excellent, though our two are grey. Where they fall down is seperating a pair of 2x1 plates.

If you're interested in Lego, try www.bricklink.com

Just don't visit the shops unless you really mean business - they're addictive. If you've got kids who're into Lego you can spend a happy few hours with them picking a tenner's worth of individual items and then the happy anticipation of waiting for the postman.

The random stuff behind my keyboard includes one. A green one, even.

The brick separator debuted in 1987, and has been included in several sets since then. People playing with Lego before 1987, though, were out of luck.
