The 'Long Tail' is not just a Chris Anderson fever-dream


Look at the graphic above, a screenshot of my traffic a few minutes ago.

Note the following:

• "1-20 of 314" represent 61.5% of visitors

• Which means that 21-314 must account for 38.5%.

There's plenty of room at the bottom.


FunFact: "1-20" actually number only 19.

ii — James B. Stewart of the Wall Street Journal glimpses the future (and survives reentry to tell us about it)


In his January 30, 2008 "Common Sense" column in the Wall Street Journal, he wrote, "... the iPod isn't just an attractive commodity. It's successfully being extended into phones and, I predict, will someday be the center of an integrated and seamless network of communications device, laptop, desktop and big screen for which we'll be downloading product (songs, games, television, news, movies) from the iStore."

The device up top is a toe in the water in that direction.

There's no reason whatsover for the iPhone's future iterations not to simply click into a dock in the keyboard section of a Mac laptop and be the computer.

In fact, what with the convergence of the iPhone's touchscreen technology and the new MacBook Air's touchpad, there's really no reason not to simply use the iPhone's screen as the future computer's touchpad once it's locked in place.

Sure hope this doesn't cause Apple's formidable team of patent/copyright/trademark lawyerbots to come pouring out of their Cupertino hideyhole.

In case you were wondering, ii is pronounced "Aye aye."
