World-Class Ribs — From Chili's?

2slab2

Yes!

A friend in Texas told me their ribs were great and so I set out to try them last night.

My local Chili's is 1.46 miles from my house.

I called and ordered the following:

1 rack ribs — Memphis Dry Rub

1/2 rack ribs — Brown Sugar Chile [sic] Rub

2 sides (included) — Sauteed mushrooms, onions and bell peppers; Cinnamon apples

"Ready in 30 minutes," said the guy and I was there on time to pick up my order, which cost a grand total of $23.58 including tax.

Then straight home to try 'em.

The verdict: As good as 99% of ribs I've had at the very best emporia in the U.S.

And I have made many a long road trip in search of great ribs.

They easily past the ultimate test, to wit: BBQ sauce is not only unnecessary, it would detract from their excellence.

The only place that instantly comes to mind as being better is the iconic Charlie Vergo's (whose charcoal-grilled dry rub ribs are pictured up top) in downtown Memphis, Tennessee.

There are over 1,000 Chili's restaurants, mostly located in the U.S., offering their sensational ribs.

I'll be back.

Note: I've tried a number of frozen mail-order ribs, including those from Charlie Vergo's.

Don't waste your money.

Ribs simply cannot survive the freeze/thaw/heat cycle and result in anything close to the real thing as served at their various BBQ pits and restaurants of origin.

Ribs...oh my. Memphis is the home of BBQ. I never seen so much BBQ'd things in my life as I have here. Love Beale Street and it's antics. Love Graceland. Even with all the streetwalkers and bums hovering around. Elvis would have handed them a fried PB nana sandwich at least. The poor Pyramid is losing it's zest. Now that FEDEX has again become number one in of all things the entertainment biz? Not like being number one in the shipping industry wasn't enough? Everything that makes Memphis great is also killing it. Rendezvous still has a good following? I mean if it's good enough for the prez then hey it's gotta be good enough for us commoners too. I do think Corky's was trying hard to be First. But they are falling down...but they are still number one in my book. Love what Memphis is doing downtown now. Taking older buildings and making them into million dollar townhomes. NOW we're talking. Like all the homeless on Union can possibly afford one....HA Push them out of downtown so the rich can take it back. Throw the homeless a rib bone please. It used to be a nice place to live. For families even. oh well just some thoughts about bbq ribs and Memphis. heeheee

If you're ever in Kansas City (or Vegas), and you love ribs, you've got to try Gates and Sons. In KC, Jack's Stack is a close second.

my sister lives in Memphis and every time I go there I have to go to Charlie Vergo's Rendezvous. Their dry rub is killer!

I would bet that Chili's ribs are frozen and reheated at each store. If you ask nicely they might even sell them to you frozen to put in your freezer.

1220 CAL 66gm fat, per serving. Hopefully that is a whole rack, and not a 1/2.

I've had Chile's ribs. Eh, they're okay. But my all-time favorite bones were from a little mom & pop shack called Lonny's in Santa Clara, California. It was in what used to be an A&W, with a hand-painted pink pig on the roof, across from the Rosecrucean museum. Lonny tended the ribs and his wife made sweet potato pies. It's probably gone now.
