Part of my job is to instruct legal, financial and other professional service-industry folks on how perform full-text searches for documents in content management systems. I am no longer surprised when I ask how they would search for information on bicycle tires and 90% of the time they respond that they would search for "bicycle" and "tires" as separate search terms and not "bicycle tires".

Isn't Search: "dolphins NOT football" The Dolphins circle minus the overlap? And wouldn't parenthetical notation be an implicit AND?
