How come my cat doesn't seem to mind insanely loud music?
According to experts, cats' hearing is far better than that of humans and some believe their ears are potentially more susceptible to damage from loud noises than those of people.
Yet Gray Cat (above) doesn't seem to mind at all when the music's blasting here at bookofjoe World Headquarters™.
What gives?

Maybe the window does have a good coat of skank, but I really like the way it makes that top half look -- I guess the greenish part with the blocky shapes is a reflection, but it looks like a sinister, fog-shrouded cityscape, and to the right maybe a huge JumboTron on top of a sheer cliff face, adding to the surreality. It's wonderful. Damn, I might have to paint that.

auditory canal, feline ear mites can have that effect and are detectable if you take a close look with a mignifying glass by pulling the ear way back, however by looking at that nasty window maybe Humphreys ears are full of dirt and grime that has been coming off that window for several decades also the sound is diminished due to the window not reflecting the waves because of the coating of skank on the window. Kind a like they do in a recording studio to get rid of the echo.

My guess is that it becomes 'normal' behavior. Last time me and my wife went out of state, my Sister and her kids would come over to check on the cats. Of the three cats, one would not come down stairs unless they started playing one of my CD's that I had left in a portable stereo.
Of course, he could have been coming downstairs in the hopes of turning the music off.

I would wonder about a few things -- how old was he (I'll assume he) when he came to live with you, has he ever been sensitive to the loud music, and is his general demeanor more high-strung or more laid-back? If he was a little kitten when you got him, he could've just grown used to the racket (it could even be comforting, maybe, since it would be a good indicator that you, his source of chow, water, warm places to sleep & probably fun & hijinks, is around somewhere). I'm guessing it's got more to do with the general wiring up of a cat's nervous system than anything -- a calm, phlegmatic kitty can withstand quite a bit of clamor and pandemonmium before it hides in a closet or flips out completely. If he was grown when you got him, maybe he hears it, hates it, but just doesn't what to expend the energy to get his (non-existent, hopefully) balls in an uproar.

I'll hazard an obvious guess... he's gone a little deaf maybe?
