Because both sides open it has to be a storage devise but I guess I am just hoping it isn't a commode.

for some reason, I really want to say that it's a wine cooler, but if it were, I imagine there would be refrigerator type stuff on the inside

I was thinking tissue box cover too, but isn't it too tall?

How about a house for a gnome- with a skylight included? Or maybe it's a primitive hole for the fire-smoke to go out of. Since many gnomes live indoors, it would be o.k. (Door and windows would be on the other side!) Maybe it's unfinished still- that round hole is where they will build a chimney. I bet the pages of the book make dandy room-dividers, Japanese-screen style. I can imagine a little tiny gnomish realtor giving a tour of the place- "Genuine leather-bound walls, first edition!" Not that gnomes use money, from what I remember reading-
