Favorite Websites from the Bizarro World: LibraryThing UnSuggester

From the website: "UnSuggester takes 'people who like this also like that' and turns it on its head. It analyzes the thirty-six million books LibraryThing members have recorded as owned or read, and comes back with books least likely to share a library with the book you suggest."

I'm reminded of a friend back in college who was always setting me up with her friends.

After a couple disasters I realized it was as if she were choosing the type least likely to be compatible with me, even though she believed they were perfect.

The reason must have been that my presentation of self to her was markedly at odds with the person I actually was.

But if I presented the person I actually was to her, she'd no longer be my friend.

Such are the compromises we make.

The UnSuggester was pretty good. I typed in a book I really hated, and it came back with a long list of all different books- many of which I had read, or knew of! Haha!!!! I didn't think the Suggester was so good though. I typed in different books I really liked, and all it gave me was different versions of the same book, or books by the same author, or commentaries on the same book. Lame.

And my suggestion in life is that if you can find someone that will put up with your faults, habits, and idiosycrancies, hold onto them for life.

I used to do that thing where you try to manicure your persona to be what you think will be more agreeable and less difficult and all that, and it got to be such a strain that I had to give it up. I figure there's just as much chance that somebody will hate the sham me as they will the real me, so I'm going with the way that's less work. That pesky real self just keeps on trying to crash the party, so why not just invite it in and introduce it around. So to speak.
