The miracle of Josefina Scaglione

Long story short, from Patricia Cohen's February 19, 2009 New York Times item: "The tale of how Ms. Scaglione's YouTube video [above] landed her an audition and then the lead in Arthur Laurents's revival of 'West Side Story' is already on its way to becoming Broadway lore."

The Buenos Aires-born Ms. Scaglione is a classically-trained opera singer who appeared in numerous musicals in Argentina โ€” among them "Annie," "Fame" and "Hairspray" โ€” before being chosen to play Maria.

And she looks a bit like Stephanie Seymour with some Caroline of Monaco thrown in for good measure.

She sounds like a lovely girl. Great voice, beautiful face and graceful body. A perfect Maria so far. I have my doubts about the accent however. Argentinians like Spaniards are almost incapable of tamping down their native accents when speaking another language unless they have learned that other language very young. It colors everything. But who cares, she'll be an Argentinian Maria. What a coup for the Southern Cone!
