'Dogs are smarter than toddlers, IQ tests show'

Long story short: "Even the average dog has the mental abilities of a two-year-old child."

The seven smartest breeds in order of IQ, border collies being the brightest:

1. Border collie

2. Poodle

3. German shepherd

4. Golden retriever

5. Doberman

6. Shetland sheepdog

7. Labrador retriever

concur with Antares. Australian shepherds are amazing dogs. we looked after one in the last few years of his life, they are SO intuitive, not only when it comes to humans in general, but they are even able to fathom the relationships between humans.

We've owned a lot of dogs, but Shep the Australian shepherd was definitely the most intelligent dog we've had the pleasure of meeting.

I don't believe your list is complete. It does not contain the Australian Shepherd breed. In my experience, Australian Shepherds are born trained.

I grew up on a cattle ranch. I have herded cattle by foot, by horse (including a retired champion cutting horse), by motorcycle, by tractor, and by jeep. None of these worked half as well as one man and a dog.

Adam was our Australian Shepherd. When not working, he was an extremely shy dog. But at the command "Adam, up! Get 'em", he turned into running streak of canine energy.

We never trained him, but he responded to commands. (?!) Go. Get 'em. Lie down. That one (with a hand gesture to point out the chosen animal).

Truly he was a great dog.
