Martin Margiela thinks outside the envelope

Ap10100107339

From Jezebel: "Paris, October 1: A model presents a creation from Belgian designer Martin Margiela, part of his ready-to-wear spring-summer 2011 collection."

I'm betting that when Margiela espied the photo up top, which went around the world in an internet yoctosecond on Friday, he blew his stack, apoplectic about how it was possible for the model to have been allowed to walk with what appears to be a very visible Band-Aid atop her left forefoot.

Note added at 9:21 p.m. tonight: A comment just came in from Ale, who wrote: "That band is part of the shoe. Think before you type."

I visited the link furnished by Ale and found this picture:

Clearly, the band is part of the shoe, as also suggested by perspicacious reader MS who emailed me earlier this evening as follows: "I saw the bandaid in question and interpreted it as a strap upon second glance. I got the impression that the leather of the shoes didn't go over the toe at all, that the leather went straight up from the sole. I thought it was all part of the playfulness of the ensemble."

Both Ale and MS hit the nail on the head while I was busy missing the cluetrain. It is apparent that I need to raise the level of my game and clean house re: my crack research team, whom I blame for this fiasco.

I'm preparing their pink slips as you read these words; they'll be gone from the premises by midnight, with an entirely new team ready to take over tomorrow.

Note added at 2:32 p.m. October 6, 2010: Wrote Eric Wilson in an October 4, 2010 New York Times review, "A model wearing a classic trench that was starched and stretched over a plastic frame into a flat rectangle could just as well have been wearing a sandwich board."

But that's the whole point, isn't it?

She was "wearing a sandwich board": it said "Martin Margiela" and went viral.

Not bad.

Poor girl, she looks just as miserable as one might imagine when one is wearing a table top.
