Avalanche Airbag

Good idea.

Caption for the YouTube video above: "Testing conducted on December 13, 2010 in Breckenridge, Colorado. Two dummies were placed beneath separate cornices, which were broken loose using explosives. Each dummy goes for a long ride down the slope, as highlighted in the video."

From Bloomberg BusinessWeek: "The airbag will help keep you on top of a snow slide rather than buried under it. It protects a skier's head and neck, and can be reused multiple times."

Can you car's airbags do that?

Didn't think so.

$699 (free shovel included).

For those of us who enjoy alpine climbing, this has possibilities. The problem is that not all avalanches are "powder" avalanches. Skiers seek out powder - but 90% of avalanche fatalities are the result of slab avalanches - climbing territory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalanche

Here is a good video of a slab avalanche: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwtxNYt6r5U

That backpack (and, you) will be ground to paste by the slabs.
