17-year-old Joan Baez sings in 1958

Above, performing at Club 47 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

At the time, Bob Dylan was still a student in Hibbing, Minnesota.

Baez turned 70 earlier this year.

Beautiful, and one of my favorite folk songs, too - Barbara (Barbry, in this version) Allen. JB was an absolute natural. Usually I'm not crazy about fast vibratos, but it has always worked for her, and it was never strident (like, to me, Buffy Sainte-Marie's).

I love the Insanely Gifted Musical Youths department, so I can't resist one - chubby little 13-year-old Itzhak Perlman sawing away at (some of) the Mendelssohn E Minor concerto (finale):

A refinement or two, as time passes, if anybody wonders if he got any better (with Zinman conducting the NYPO):

Just for the heck of it, here's Heifetz playing it (backed up by a fabulous youth orchestra, with Grandpappy Amos beating time). Lotsa string fans consider Heifetz the most technically perfect ever. I'd tend to agree. Even the dog likes it, and they know.

A shame that the audio quality isn't up to that crystalline-pure voice with the vibratto from heaven. Thanks for the post, Joe - only diamonds, no rust to be found on BOJ.
