Ear Trainer

Screen Shot 2011-08-12 at 10.17.02 PM

"This is a simple ear training tool. It plays a musical interval, and shows you the bottom note. You click the top note."

"When you're done, check out the statistics."

Noted one commenter, "you are all idiots. it clearly states at the bottom: THIS IS INTENDED FOR PEOPLE WHO KNOW MUSIC THEORY."

Fair warning.

Idiots who don't know music theory are some of my favorite people. Maybe even more favorite than the idiots who do know music theory. Anybody who fools around with it is part idiot to begin with, or will soon be.

My favorite interval (perfect example: idiot phrase) is the perfect 5th because there was a guy in my freshman college MT course who used to sit in the back of the room and sing B. O. (as in the old deodorant commercial - Beeeee Oooooooo, in a descending fifth) while the teacher was trying to drill intervals into our hard heads, and it always cracked me up.

And then my next favorite one is the good old tritone (augmented 4th; diminished 5th) which any idiot can recognize, schooled up or not - think every science fiction movie you've ever seen, and the first two notes of the actual melody of Bernstein's "Maria" (Ma-ree, that's the tritone).

Here's a Wikipedia article that will tell you more than you could ever possibly want to know about the tritone. In fact, just skip it, unless you need some sleep.
