Strandbeests — Episode 2: They live!
My crack research team is really cooking today, they just sent me the video above, which accompanies the wonderful New Yorker article by Ian Frazier about Dutch kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen, noted in yesterday's 2:01 p.m. post which was headed by the most viewed YouTube video I could find of Jansen's work.
Lena Herzog, who's been photographing Jansen and the Strandbeests since 2007, was asked what she found most unexpected about them; she replied, "That it could make an optimist out of a Russian."
That's some powerful stuff indeed.
Scroll down this page for a slide show of Herzog's pictures.
But wait, there's more.
For those who can't get enough of Jansen and/or are desperate for something — anything! — to do rather than what they're supposed to be doing (I see you, don't try to duck down in your chair...), here's Jansen's March 2007 TED talk.
