Experts' Expert: How to create an effective online profile picture

Paulphoto2_reasonably_small

Wrote Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan in a story in yesterday's Wall Street Journal, citing Nicole Williams, connection director for LinkedIn, "LinkedIn research shows that a page with a profile picture is seven times as likely to be viewed as a page without one."

More advice from Williams:

• Your profile picture should feature you alone, not your pet or significant other

• The way you are dressed should reflect the norms of the profession you're in or hope to join

• To look as natural as possible, have your picture taken by a friend or someone who puts you at ease rather than a professional

• People respond better to color photos than black-and-white ones

Ueli Steck's record solo climb — in 2 hours 47 minutes — up the North Face of the 13,000-plus-foot Eiger

The Swiss mountaineer performed his amazing feat on February 13, 2008.

The video above, narrated by Steck, has highlights.

Since Steck's ascent, another Swiss climber, Dani Arnold, has cut the Eiger record to 2:28, using the fixed ropes on the Hinterstoisser Traverse (Steck used no ropes, climbing entirely without aid).

For reference, the first ascent of the Eiger's North Face occurred only in 1938; In 1950 the route was climbed in 18 hours.

More on the new sport of speed climbing in Sunday's New York Times front page story.

New York Times photo encore — Joan of Arc in England

20britain-1319056437236-articleLarge

Above, a photo which appeared on page eight of yesterday's New York Times above a story about a bitter 10-year-long legal battle in Britain over the occupation of land in an encampment east of London.

Photo caption: "A protester in front of a burning barricade tried to prevent the eviction of families from Dale Farm near the town of Basildon in Essex County on Wednesday."

The appearance of photos whose compelling element is fire on both the front and and an inside page of Section A of the Grey Lady yesterday I find remarkable.

A zombie on the front page of the New York Times?

Screen Shot 2011-10-20 at 6.13.40 PM

Yesterday's paper featured the photo above dominating the front page, a bit unsettling to say the least.

The caption: "Youths at a barricade in Athens as a two-day general strike began in Greece to protest sweeping new austerity measures."
