We get email: "Pages have started to take WAY too long to load"

About 10 days ago I received the following email from joehead* JR — no, not THAT JR — in Ohio:

Mostly delayed by waiting for bits from social media domains. Love your site, but I no longer have the patience to wait 30+ seconds to be able to scroll and see other items. Maybe this "like," "+1" and other things are important to you, but not me and waiting is not my long suit. BTW, sometimes it take more than a minute to load a page.

By far the most important thing to me — second place, whatever it might be, isn't even in the rearview mirror — is keeping my readers happy and making bookofjoe a positive experience.

Becoming part of the World Wide Wait doesn't fit under that rubric.

But I must ask both JR and others, is it possible that it's not boj but, rather, your internet connection that's slow?

Or is it just boj that's loading noticeably more slowly?

I must say I haven't noticed any change in the pretty much instantaneous page loading of boj here at boj World Headquarters©™® since I added those social buttons at the bottom, but then, my download speeds are pretty fast, in the range of 25Mps, and have been for a year or so.

The more feedback I get on this, the more helpful the action I can take.

*A reader automatically becomes a joehead — you have no choice, essentially — when using the word "love" or an equivalent to describe your relationship to boj.

I have noticed numerous times in just the last three weeks that images or videos won't load via the rss feed reader on my phone or comp (NetNewsWire). It happens only with your site of the 75 blogs I follow. It is quite frustrating, but I usually just figure it must not be interesting enough for me to see. This happens about 5-10% of the time.

Although in a previous life, I was a programmer, I don't mess around with my PC. It is what it is and it does what it does.

I have noticed that sites with a lot of "junk" on it take longer to load. Um...including...

Yes, it's been taking longer the last few months. Seems it was after you did a slight redesign. But also, I live in the sticks and I blame my carrier on the really slow days.

I found using ie 7 (my workplace's default browser)the load is intolerable. I had to download firefox at work in order to view your site.

No problems loading, both in my desktop and laptop. Using Chrome.

Dear Joe,

That's true, I haven't tried out a treadmill workspace BUT... I did figure out how to tweet and ride my bike at the same time. Doesn't that count for something? ;-) Check it: http://www.bitrebels.com/technology/how-to-twitter-ride-your-bike-at-the-same-time/

Have an awesome day. Love your site.

Your site loads instantly for me almost all the time, but for some reason, the images in this very post are taking forever! Hurr durr hurrrmm, whaddya think it culd be? Prolly space demons.

Chrome . . . smoking fast computer . . . Cox high-speed . . . experience the delay load as mentioned, but go to another page, such as NYT or CNN while waiting for BOJ to wake up. Think it has to do the photos on BOJ.

Your site loads just fine. More specifically, it's like a bolt of lightening that moves so fast you can't help but get bonked in the head and wonder what happened. Seriously... It's fine. LOL =)

LOL, Most always blame the messenger.

You site is fine, Only on a rare occasion do I experience a slight delay.

The biggest annoyance (due to our instant gratification society)

is when you respond, there sometimes is a delay making less experienced

BOJ readers apt to hit the post button again… and again …and again….

Never really had a problem with the BOJ and I do check in now and then.

I've had page load issues on a number of platforms. What makes BOJ load fastest is Netscape's Firefox with the No Script add in. On an iPad I was experiencing page lockups in ios 4.3 Safari, but not with the Opera mini browser. Chrome, Safari and Netscape all can have load issues and they aren't tied to bandwidth. I've hit the site on everything from a 45 Mbs frame relay to dialup (yes, I still have a dialup account as the vbackup of last resort - when the zombies take over, Earthlink will be the *last* place they invade).

I'm writing this from a Snow Leopard Server using Safari 5.1 with TWC as the broadband provider. No delays.

Your site and all pages (that I've tested) load almost instantly for me. I'm on Time Warner Wideband service, 30 down and 5 up.

The biggest hit on page load times I've seen is when you increased the size of your pictures some months back.

All the Javascript in the emblems and elsewhere dramatically increase load times on older browsers. Chrome ver 14 loads BOJ almost instantaneously, while Internet Explorer 7 takes much longer. I think Microsoft improved the Javascript compiler in version 8 and 9 of Internet Explorer, so your reader might want to give them or Chrome a try.

Don't use FireFox, so can't comment on it.

On a shared 5 meg connection, I'm getting page loads around 5 seconds (tried on various dates to verify).

Site loads near-instantaneously for me. There are, of course, other compelling reasons for removing the emblems; to wit, they allow the sites (such as Facebook) to track your visitors' behavior online (http://yro.slashdot.org/story/10/11/30/1734249/facebooks-like-this-button-is-tracking-you).

You can use YSlow (http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/help/) to help you figure out why your page is slow (hence the name). I don't know how TechnoDolt (tm) friendly it is, but it may be worth a try.
