Express lines actually take more time.
Each item takes an average of 2.8 seconds to scan and each persons transaction time is 48 seconds on average.
So it would be better for the person in front of you to add 17 items to their cart than to let someone with only one item cut in front of you.

Of course there are other variables too: coupons, price checks, people who talk too much, etc.
Checks take longer than credit; credit takes longer than cash.
