"Little Dieter Needs to Fly" — Part 1: "A thousand pounds of rice!"

Werner Herzog's wonderful 1997 film, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly," is a story in itself.

I was reminded of it by Brendan I. Koerner's reply to news of my Saturday post featuring the waterBob: "Thanks. For some reason, this made me think of the scene in Herzog's 'Little Dieter Needs to Fly' in which Dieter Dengler reveals the trove of survival essentials stashed beneath his house."

I emailed Koerner back that though I saw the movie and liked it very much, I didn't recall the survival trove.

He wrote back, "This is the scene: http://youtu.be/86buJyDke6Y. A thousand pounds of rice!"

I watched it and still didn't remember seeing it before, and I emailed that to him.

He replied, "Remembering obscure scenes from books/movies/etc. is my special talent. If only I could monetize somehow...."

I know the feeling: the things I am really, really good at are impossible to translate into cash money.

Oh well.

Part 1 of "Little Dieter Learns to Fly" appears up top, the first of a six-part version of the film, all of them on YouTube.
