How to get a personalized, signed copy of John Grisham's new book, "Calico Joe" — without leaving home

The ad above appeared in yesterday's Charlottesville Daily Progress.

Grisham, a long-time resident of Albemarle County (but not as long-time as me), in a laudable effort that helped save what is the oldest (established in 1924) independent bookstore in Virginia, for many years appeared in person at the New Dominion Bookshop on the release day of his best-selling legal thrillers to personally inscribe a book for each and every person who lined up to buy one.

Finally, the lines grew so long that the store abandoned that practice in favor of letting anyone call or email to order a signed and personalized copy.

"Calico Joe," which so far has received very good reviews, went on sale yesterday.

How to open a bottle of wine with a shoe

Good trick, since you're more likely to have shoes on than to have a corkscrew in your bag or pocket.

Gray Cat Hearts Comcast

The best thing about Comcast is the perfect size and upper surface temperature of its box.

I estimate Gray Cat spends about six hours a day on top of it, sleeping and dreaming.

2600 The Hacker Quarterly

The cover of the new issue was designed by Dave Buchwald who noted, "This year's theme is a kind of treasure hunt that takes you on a journey. It's really a lot of fun mapping out the path and then making it come alive visually."
