Interstate 70 Wormhole

Image001

Leave it to reader Joe Peach to have stumbled on the physics equivalent of the Lascaux cave.

He wrote, "I use Google Maps Street View a lot and there are artifacts and mis-stitched photos all over the place, however I don't ever remember seeing a major distortion from their satellite view. I found this anomaly right in my back yard (maybe it's a distortion on the satellite lens???)."

Maybe not.

It's probably just a strange effect from the algorithm that is trying to convert a spherical map onto a flat plane. A "corner of a circle" if you will.
