I well remember the various "Atoms for peace" projects placed in Pop. Sci. and similar publications that I read as a youth. I remember that a new, and much wider, Panama Canal was supposed to be on the nuclear drawing board - built in record time with a string of H-Bombs detonated across isthmus at depth.
I would expect that a majority of these articles were CIA/USIA propaganda pieces.
