Fascinating photo of the day: Extremely rare white rhino flanked by bodyguards

TrLr6

From PictureCorrect: "There are only seven (7) white rhinos left in the entire world. This one lives in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy of Kenya and has been assigned his own team of heavily armed bodyguards to keep him safe from from poachers and whatever else might want to cause him harm. They also removed his horn to further deter poachers. His name is Baraka and he reportedly loves people and is very friendly. Right now he’s about 40 years old, sources say he could live to be as old as 80."

There's a key word missing: northern - see the Wikipedia entry on northern white rhino for the backstory on the pic above

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_white_rhinoceros

The southern white rhino here in southern Africa is at threat (IUCN near threatened) numbering less than 20,000 and with recent very heavy poaching being an ongoing news story here in South Africa. But recent estimates I've read suggest populations are more or less stable unless poaching escalates further. Black rhino are in really deep s&%t here too though, with the global population at less than 5,000, heavy poaching, slow reproduction, and the western subspecies already extinct:
