I reckon the Dutch know a thing or two about cycling (having one of the highest cycling rates in the developed world) and bakfiets are incredibly popular there. I've used trailers and bakfiets, they both have their places, if you have the space for a bakfiets they win hands down in terms of usability if you're carrying stuff (kids included).
I agree with you about the flip-flops though, but I'd go a bit further - he doesn't seem to know much about wearing flip-flops either.

The rider pictured above in the Peugeot jersey evidently knows nothing about cycling; he is wearing flip-flops. For the life of me, I cannot understand what would move someone who knew anything about cycling to buy this expensive and unstable contraption rather than a bicycle trailer: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=bicycle%20trailer
