BehindTheMedspeak: How to tell just by looking if a mole is benign

MOLE+HAIRY

Quick and dirty: If there is a hair growing out of a mole, the mole is benign.

Moles

I learned this during my fourth year of medical school on a dermatology rotation.

Why does hair growth equate with a spot or nevus not being cancerous?

Because the degree of cellular and tissue organization required for hair to grow is incompatible with the disorganized, chaotic cell growth of cancer.

Hmm, very interesting. Does that mean that the un-bald never get skin cancer on the scalp and dogs & cats never get it on the furry parts?
