BehindTheMedspeak: "Post-Combat Driving: The American Road"

1

From David Brown's May 5 Washington Post story: "The military is beginning to pay attention to the particular risks facing — and needs of — Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who resume driving when they get home."

"The Army gives out a brochure [above and below]

2

called 'Post-Combat Driving: The American Road' that includes data from a survey that an occupational therapist at the University of Minnesota, Erica B. Stern, conducted with deployed and non-deployed reservists. (49% of returning troops said they were anxious when cars approached quickly; 25% said they had driven through stop signs in the previous month.) The publication has tips on how to increase self-control; one is to tape a drawing by one's child to the dashboard."

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was Miss Lube Rack 1959*

Image00111

From 2007 to 2011 she was third in line for the presidency in the event of the deaths of both the president and vice-president.

But 48 years earlier she wasn't no third or second but came first.

Life Magazine photo caption: Miss Nancy D'Alesandro, Miss Lube Rack 1959, aka member of Congress and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi at age 19.

Jennifer Granholm, Miss San Carlos in 1977 and governor of Michigan from 2003 to 2011?

Small beer.

No electrical cords to run and no melting ice cubes.

This freezable bowl keeps his drink icy cold for 8 hours.

Stale and warm water in your pet's bowl can encourage bacteria growth.

Look, you enjoy an icy cold drink on a warm day... now, so can your pet!

Just insert in the freezer for two hours, then fill and place in the sturdy nonslip base — she'll still be lapping up cool water when you get home from work.

Midnight Movie: "The Time of Your Life" (1948)

Can't sleep?

Here's a perfect anodyne.

From Open Culture: "Adapted from the 1939 William Saroyan play of the same title (the play won the Pulitzer Prize), the film stars James Cagney and William Bendix."

From archive.org: "In this adaptation of William Saroyan's award-winning play, James Cagney plays a gentle barfly named Joe who settles in Nick's (William Bendix) Bar with various colorful characters like an imaginative old cowboy or a tap dancing comic who can't get laughs. His sister Jeanne plays Kitty Duval, a woman who claims to once have been in burlesque. She and her brother have some of the most touching scenes in the movie. The pace takes a while to get used to, but if you're in the mood for something optimistically offbeat, 'The Time of Your Life' should be up your alley."
