"PAPER CUTS — HOW TECHNOLOGY IS DESTROYING THE GUIDE BOOK"

1374845016

Great cover on the latest issue of Open Skies, the in-flight magazine of Emirate Airlines.

I never really thought about the premise until I read it here but I suppose it is true and will only become more so as Google Glass and its ilk gain traction.

From my Eurailpass days, even the travel guides then (the good ones, such as the "Let's Go" series) were meant to be torn apart and discarded. If you weren't going to Iceland, you simply tore the chapter out and tossed it (or gave it away). Travel guides, translation dictionaries, maps etc. have always been reduced in size since they have to be carried from place to place - this is just the logical extension (though you won't get to keep that map with all the scribbled remarks for your kids to find years later).
