Elmore was so gifted a student of regional dialect that he wrote entire stories around characters who used nothing but regional dialect. Some rules are made to be broken.

Elmore's U.S. Marshall Raylin Givens (and, every bad guy & gal he runs into) comes to mind...

Robert B. Parker's Spencer for Hire series has his Cholo character always speaking in Latino patois and the imposing sidekick Hawk changing from urban inner city to urbane in a single sentence.
