Tumblr_ms77pq4c001rqo4zeo2_500

From the University of Iowa Special Collections & Archives website, posted by Colleen Theisen: "This is one example of a fore-edge painting from a four volume set of scientific books* which are divided by season. Each has a landscape painting of the season hidden until you begin to read it and bend the pages to turn them."

*"Autumn; or; The causes, appearances, and effects of the seasonal decay and decomposition of nature"; 1837. By Robert Mudie.

Fish grows false eye on rear fin to confuse predators

From the New York Times: "Tiny damsel fish will grow a false eye on their rear fins when constantly exposed to predators, say researchers at Australia's ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. The eye mark helps the fish escape by making it appear to be moving in the opposite direction."
