In late August of 1966 my first ever plane trip concluded by landing in Los Angeles where I was about to matriculate at U.C.L.A., having set sail from Milwaukee on a great adventure.

I will never, ever forget my astonishment at the brown cloud surmounting the L.A. basin that the plane flew through as we descended to LAX.

The best comparison I can make today, 47 years later? "Blade Runner."

Growing up I could not see the George Washington Bridge from one mile east down the Hudson on most days - this being the mid 1960s.

Southern Los Angeles County doesn't have 1960s NYC's particulates - but, it isn't what it was in the 1980s.
