My mother, the shrink (Tulane Med. class of 1950), gave me the Inside scoop on the etymolology of the term "vitamin" - a contraction of "vital amines" and part of the snake oil / hucksters who crafted their "special" nutrients that would cure everything from TB & GC to The Vapors - lead by such marvelous medicinals still on the market as certain classes of Corn-based breakfast products and sweet, brown "crackers" made with wheat flour additives.

The history of these enterprises is fascinating. Nobody less than Harry Truman was connected to that group - where the famous photo of the Dewey Beats Truman newspaper headline was taken at the Excelsior Springs Hotel - NW of Kansas City - where the afflicted would gather to "take the waters" in a giant, communal, swimming pool/hot tub (and, infect their friends and neighbors). Been to that interesting enterprise - the four of us had a sulphur-aroma Olymipc-sized pool all to ourselves one Friday evening back in 1992.

Meanwhile, micro-nutrition and gut-biome are hot areas of research.

I wonder if some corporation will get the patent on what passes through the distal GI tract?

Will we see the day when all have to insert a quarter with each flush as a reasonable royalty? The snake oil business is booming.
