What with the powderkeg nature of the Middle East growing more likely every day to conflagrate big-time, it has become obvious to me that my chance of ever visiting Petra in person is now zero.

That's why technology exists.

Google Maps has launched Street View imagery in more than 30 historical sites in Jordan, including Petra.

The imagery was collected with the Street View Trekker, which is a 40-pound backpack that snaps photos as the operator walks.

Those images are then stitched together to create the 360° imagery you see in Google Maps.
