Archive of 150,000 Bird Calls and Animal Sounds (Dating Back to 1929)

From Open Culture

Ornithologists and bird watchers, rejoice.

After a dozen years, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology's Macaulay Library has fully digitized its nearly 150,000 audio recordings (a total running time of 7,513 hours), representing close to 9,000 different species, such as the very unsettling-sounding Barred Owl (above).

While the collection also includes the sounds of whales, elephants, frogs, primates, and other animals, the primary emphasis here is on birds (it is a lab of ornithology, after all), and there is an incredible range of calls.

iClever v Apple: Keyboard Throwdown

2

So here I go, my first boj post using the iPhone 7+/iA Writer app/iClever folding keyboard as I begin the shift to mobile.

I know: I'll compare the iClever to Apple's Magic Keyboard, my old mainstay.

iClever (above): $59.99; folds to 6.5" x 4.7" x 0.58"; weighs 10.1 oz.; backlight x choice of 3 colors (green, blue, or red) plus two brightness level options; nice key travel; full-size; charges with standard mini-USB connector; Bluetooth pairing fast/easy/obvious/WORKS.

Apple Magic Keyboard (below): $99; doesn't fold so you're stuck with 10.98" x 4.52" x 0.43"; weighs 8.2 oz.; no backlight; nice key travel; full-size; charges with Lightning connector; Bluetooth pairing on par with iClever.

The choice is yours — but only one of them will fit comfortably in your pocket or bag.
