Ladybug Origami

Fascinating back story here.

YouTube caption: "Ladybugs are highly mobile insects that can switch between walking and flying with ease and speed because they can quickly deploy and collapse their wings. To reveal the folding mechanism and structure, the researchers constructed a transparent artificial elytron from ultraviolet light-cured resin — often applied in nail art — using a silicon impression of an elytron they removed from a seven-spot ladybug, and transplanted it to replace the missing forewing. This method revealed the detailed wing-folding mechanism occurring under the elytra."

The abstract of the May 30, 2017 PNAS article describing the ladybug's elegant wing mechanisms is here.

bookofjoe's Favorite Thing: Giant Push Pins

I love these, not just because they look cartoonish but also because they are surprisingly useful in all sorts of ways and easy to handle compared to the fussy little ones we're more familiar with.

Each measures 1.5"L x 0.4"Ø.

Among my deployments:

• Clothes hook

• Putting up calendars and pictures

• Pinning a giant Hefty bag to the wall so it falls wide open, letting me toss trash in easily from a distance
