BehindTheMedspeak: iPhone Ultrasound Machine

The holodeck grows ever closer.

From USA Today:

With the right device, it appears the iPhone can even detect cancer.

According to Butterfly, its Butterfly iQ ultrasound probe

(above, next to an iPhone displaying an ultrasound image of a beating heart) sells for under $2,000.

According to health industry website Modern Healthcare, the average price for ultrasound systems is $115,000, with low-end systems costing $25,000.

The new device is aimed at healthcare practitioners and facilities in the U.S. licensed to perform ultrasounds.

It ships in early 2018, and works with iPhone models as far back as the iPhone SE.

A big reason the device is much cheaper than a traditional ultrasound machine is that most of the technology is housed within a microchip.

"Just as putting a camera on a semiconductor chip made photography accessible to anyone with a smartphone and putting a computer on a chip enabled the revolution in personal computing before that, Butterfly's Ultrasound-on-a-Chip technology enables a low-cost window into the human body, making high-quality diagnostic imaging accessible to anyone," said Dr. Jonathan Rothberg, founder and chairman of Butterfly.

Interesting article here about how the chief medical officer for Butterfly discovered his own cancer while testing the device.

Patum Peperium — How do you spell "umami?"

It's been around since 1828 but I only happened on it last month.

Great stuff if, like me, you love anchovies.

Compared to Marmite, another umami-intensive spread, it's like contrasting a Ferrari with a Kia, this stuff is so fine.*

"Use very sparingly" is spot-on: Patum Peperium is so powerful, the small container I bought ought to easily last a year.

You only need a transparent film of the spread on a bagel or piece of bread or toast to get the full impact.

Cheap at twice the $8.81 price, considering the above.

*Readers in Atlanta's southern suburbs will please retch quietly, thank you very much. You know who you are....
