Since rainfall is given in depth rather than volume this won't always be accurate. If the open mouth of the container has a larger area than the rest of it, it will give an erroneous reading by collecting rain from a wider area than its base. An extreme example would be a stoppered-up, upward-facing funnel that would collect rain over a large area, giving an erroneous indication of the depth of inches/cm that had fallen since they would be collected into a necessarily smaller volume at the bottom.
