"Hunter Killer"

I recently watched this excellent new movie.

After the first half hour or so of the two hour film, I thought to myself, "Wow, no way they can keep up this level of intensity to the end" — but they did.

I would've loved this movie when I was a kid as much as I did last week.

Random thoughts and observations:

• Gerard Butler — the star whose name I just learned though I'm sure I've seen him before in other films whose names I can't recall — is excellent as a U.S. submarine commander.

• Michael Nyqvist is just as good as a Russian submarine commander. I was shocked to learn online that he died in 2017.

• Gary Oldman as an admiral/chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is terrible: he looks disheveled. Worst performance by him I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. He's usually the best actor in any film he appears in.

• The action sequences and special effects are superb.

One of the really cool things is they shot the submarine portions in real submarine sections mounted to a huge gimbal, so when they dive, they're really angling downwards. That's why it felt realistic when they all leaned in unison - because they really were leaning in unison to try to keep their footing on the accurately angled surface.

Agree that Oldman was poorly cast and must not have viewed this gig as anything more than a paycheck. This performance was over the top and not at all representative of the incredible work he's capable of.

Toby Stephens (as "Bill Beaman") was channeling some serious John C. McGinley and I mean that in the best of ways! He's a relative newcomer who's really been catching my eye a lot lately.

I am in the middle of this muddle right now, being a fan of sub movies and of Gerard Butler (watch London has fallen to see him at his silly best) perhaps I have half an hour to go, agree with you about Oldman, sorry to learn about Nyqvist (he was terrific in John Wick) but generally, finding this to be a stinker.
