Why do old books smell?

From Flavorwire:

When you ask your literary friends why they like physical books more than e-books — if they don't immediately roll their eyes at the question, that is — they might tell you it's because they love the smell of books.

Well, we agree that there's nothing quite like the aroma of a used bookstore or a worn paperback, but we've never stopped to think about exactly what gives our dusty tomes their scent.

Until we watched this very informative video from Abe Books, that is.

"A physical book is made up of organic matter that reacts with heat, light, moisture, and most importantly of all, the chemicals used in its production," we are told. "And it is this unique reaction that causes the unique used books smell.... Old books release hundreds of volatile organic compounds into the air from the paper," and it is this which gives books their scent, "a combination of grassy notes with a tang of acids and a hint of vanilla over an underlying mustiness."

It's exactly the size of a bread box

That's because it is a bread box.

I happened on this nice piece of kit while browsing my archives: it originally appeared on July 14, 2007 at 11:01 a.m.

You could look it up.

Or just read what I wrote then:

Bread Buddy®

Fresher, smoosh-free bread — one slice at a time!

Grab a slice in seconds without fussing with twist ties.

Just fold wrapper around lip edge for neat, easy serving.

Airtight lid for longer lasting, better tasting bread.

13-1/2"L x 5-1/4"H x 5-1/4"W.

$6.99 (Wonder Bread not included).

I see that I was doing that idiotstick "not included" thing 11+ years ago: I thought the onset was much more recent.

I guess time flies when you're having a good time.

9 things I've never done and never will

• Spinning

• Bikram yoga

• Cheated on a test

• Used a debit card or ATM

• Gotten a piercing or tattoo

• Used a frequent flyer mile*

• Owned a phone, computer, or tablet that wasn't made by Apple

• Used self-checkout at a store (if they want me to do their work, give me a discount)

• Gone up onto my roof (best chance ever was when I had my roof replaced in 2012, but I declined)

*Since I no longer fly, that's a given
