What do the black triangles and diamonds on tape measures mean?

Screen Shot 2019-06-16 at 9.56.43 AM

I thought you'd never ask.

From the Epoch Times:

Perhaps the most mysterious of all the markings on your tape are small black triangles and diamonds.

Look closely and you'll see they appear at intervals of 16 inches and 19.2 inches.

What could be the point of these?

The answer is two of the key elements for building a house: studs and joists.

Most building codes mandate that studs be spaced 16 inches apart, so the tape will help you stay on the right side of the law as you construct (as well as making sure your wall can safely bear the load it needs to).

Joists, on the other hand, should be 19.2 inches apart.

Since plywood often comes in 8-feet sections, you're in luck.

Divide 8 feet (or 96 inches) by 19.2 and you get 5.

Thus, one sheet of plywood will cover 5 joists and you won't have to do any cutting.

Flight of the hawk: Ultimate precision at top speed

YouTube caption for the Smithsonian Channel video above: "With uniquely powerful eyesight and quick-moving rounded wings, the African goshawk has no trouble precisely maneuvering through the jungle's branches in order to gather top speed."

For those wishing to dive more deeply into the science of predator bird flight, spend some time with this recent paper entitled "Hawks steer attacks using a guidance system tuned for close pursuit of erratically maneuvering targets," published on June 11, 2019 in Nature Communications.

BehindTheMedspeak: Plastic Surgery Never List

M91

Never:

Shop for a bargain

Have surgery by anyone other than a qualified, board-certified, experienced plastic surgeon

Have Gore-Tex or silicone put in your lips

Have a face-lift without asking where the incision will be

Say yes to a large procedure when a smaller one can just as easily give you the result you want

Get breast implants if your mother or sister had breast cancer

Get buttocks implants

Believe a doctor who says you can have a face-lift with fat injections

Have a thigh-lift unless your inner thighs look like a Shar-pei

Let a doctor talk you into taking more than ten pounds off during a single liposuction procedure

Go under without asking beforehand what kind of anesthesia the doctor is planning to use

Hesitate to ask what qualifications the doctor has

Just assume that your surgeon will actually be doing all of the surgery

Have surgery without seeing the doctor's handiwork on other patients

Ignore your gut
