"Anathem" — Neal Stephenson

Zzz

I finished this wonderful book last week and continue to think about it.

It's almost indescribable, being both entertaining and deeply philosophical.

Even the words Stephenson invents for objects, people, and places in his fictional world are enchanting.

I need another post or three to elaborate.

"When the student is ready, the master will appear" — who hasn't heard this old saw?

Yet in my case, it turns out to be true: no way would reading Stephenson's books (first his latest, "Fall; or, Dodge in Hell") when I was younger have made the kind of impact they do now, when I'm performing daily experiments with free will and the multiverse.

His novels are long: "Anathem" is 1008 pages and "Fall; or, Dodge in Hell" 880.

That's just fine with me.
