Do you call it soda — or pop?

Screen Shot 2013-06-14 at 1.48.49 PM

It all depends on where you live.

From LinkedIn:

Created by Joshua Katz, this map shows regional variation in language.

If you were asked the generic term for a sweetened carbonated beverage, for example, what would you call it?

The responses are striking.

As shown above, the answer depends a lot on where you live.

People from the West Coast and Northeast would call it soda.

Folks from the Midwest and Mountain areas call it pop.

And folks in the South?

When they order a sweetened carbonated beverage, they ask for a Coke, even when they're ordering a Sprite (as in "I'll have a Coke. What kind? A Sprite, please").

"Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles"

If you liked yesterday's post about the Toynbee tiles, you'll enjoy this 2011 movie about them.

My Crack Research Team®© discovered it while doing research on the tiles; they tracked it down and found it was on Amazon Prime Video, where I watched it.

I took the ball and ran with it and discovered it's also on YouTube.

Free, the way we like it.

Fair warning: it's rather quiet and reflective, so much so that I dozed off a couple times during the film, but I still enjoyed the experience.

One nice thing about low-key movies like this is that when you miss bits, it doesn't affect your understanding about what's going on.
