If I add an Oxford comma, does that alter the piece enough for me to claim it as art?

Constant very close readers (I'm thinking Asperger's spectrum) will have noticed that for over fifteen years — since boj's 2004 inception, in fact — I've added Oxford commas (above) to New York Times stories (below).

The Times still refuses to use them, though every couple years it takes a moment to explain why that's still the case.

It occurred to me today that I could make an argument that my additions create a new version of the articles, such that the Times would lose if it took me to court to stop me from republishing its pieces in their entirety as I've been doing all along.

Another leg of my defense would be that I add links to the Times' stories, creating another barrier to claiming theft of intellectual property.

Of course, the best thing that could happen to me would be to be sued by the Gray Lady: the resulting kerfuffle would raise my pretty much invisible profile big-time.

A man can dream.

iPod nano FM radio fo shizzle

1436974518_1170739

This morning, for no reason I can think of, I got out my 2012 iPod nano Gen 7 and charged it up in order to see just what its FM radio can do.

One thing I've always disliked about the device's radio is that it only works if you attach headphones via the jack connection: the nano has no speaker.

No matter: my plan was to connect my AirPods 2 via Bluetooth and listen with them while stowing the iPod + headphone cord in a pocket.

I first put the nano radio through its paces, first time I've ever done so.

What I discovered:

• It's a fantastic radio: brought in around 40 (forty) FM stations clearly, way more than my much bigger portable radios

• The station-finding scan function is elegant, far better and more intuitive, than my digital portable radios

• It's almost imperceptible, weighing in at 1.05 oz. (30 grams)

• Size: 0.21" x 1.56" 3.01" (5.4mm x 39.6mm x 76.5mm)

Then it was time for point of the whole exercise: the Bluetooth experiment.

What I discovered:

• Though my AirPods connected easily to the nano, no sound came out: the audio stayed in the connected earbuds

• An attempt with non-Apple Bluetooth earphones that work fine with my nano's stored music also failed to yield radio sound except via the connected earbuds

I had my Crack Research Team©® look into this and they reported back, after several hours of deep diving, that others have asked the same question and gotten the same result I did.

More precisely: connecting the wired headphones required to make the nano's FM radio functional disables Bluetooth.

Conclusion: the nano's Bluetooth is intended to play only music stored on the device — not FM radio.

Oh well.

It will help a lot if you click on the images to maximize them.

Image sizes are irrelevant: the answers are in the content.

All will be revealed tomorrow at this time.

Hint: smaller than a bread box....

*Originally I thought there was just one but an eagle-eyed Texas reader found a second.

Non-stick Scissors

31zrI7tyIWL

You know how, when you cut Scotch or masking tape with a scissors, tape adhesive sticks to the blades and renders the scissors difficult to use?

These scissors put paid to that problem with a non-stick blade coating that "cuts through sticky adhesives without gummy build-up."

Lagniappe: I had Fiskars make them in my signature bookofjoe green©®.

They can call them the "Duck Edition" all they want but we know the truth.
