How to make the world's best popcorn* — fastest, easiest, and cheapest ever

5

In the December 10, 2003 issue of the Washington Post Jeanne McManus provided a quick and dirty guide (above and below, the original article as cut out of the paper by me, after being lovingly curated for 16 years+, hence the yellowing and curling of some of the edges) to making your own fantastic popcorn.

The red Sharpie brackets were added by me in 2003 to help me focus on the meat of the piece — even then I was addled enough to require editorial additions.

No matter.

Make it and then tell me I'm wrong about any of the claims in the headline up top.

I've tried this several times over the years, using all different kinds of popcorn...cheapo, gourmet, guaranteed "super-fluffy," and so on. There was almost no difference: the kernels were always mostly popped, but barely fluffed out and tough as nails. I'm still happiest with my bag of Kroger's low-salt Simple something-or-other, or even Skinny Pop regular. And undoing the "low-salt" and the "skinny" with a nice icy Coke, the real kind with sugar and caffeine.

It might be tricky to find a paper bag.

No oil needed? I tried this a while ago and it didn't seem to do anything!
