The Bodo's guy who gave me two containers of cream cheese would be a star anywhere

This past Sunday around 10 a.m. I went to Bodo's for two dozen bagels, cream cheese, salads, and an egg/cheddar/sausage-on-everything bagel.

When they called my number — 432 — I looked in all the bags to make sure everything was there.

Oops: no cream cheese!

I said to the guy at the counter, "I thought I ordered two containers of cream cheese... but I may have forgotten....

He didn't even look at my order slip: instead, he quickly opened the refrigerator and pulled two containers of cream cheese and put them in my bag.

"No problem," he said, then went back to doing what he was doing.

I checked my receipt: I forgot to order cream cheese.

Tell you what: that guy did what I would have done but what 99.9% of people in his position wouldn't have.

Except that Bodo's peeps are uniformly wonderful and 99% of people wouldn't be hired to work there.

Susan Choi emerges

Screen Shot 2019-11-20 at 11.06.18 PM

Don't take my word for it: full story in yesterday's New York Times article.

For those who missed my June 15, 2019 post: "A couple weeks ago, it was Susan Choi's superb new novel, 'Trust Exercise.'"

On August 19, 2019, I wrote about her second book, "American Woman":

I just finished this 2003 novel based on the Patty Hearst kidnapping.

Choi's second book, it was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

Like all three of her novels I've read previously, it's excellent.

Her characters seem as real as real people; they come to life in your mind like living, breathing holograms.

Add her to the short list of authors all of whose books I've read (or will have read), each new one a must-read.
