Gmail doesn't see periods between words before the @ symbol

I've long since lost count of the number of people I know whose Gmail addresses are abc.def@gmail.com.

Guess what?

abc.def@gmail.com is the same as abcdef@gmail.com.

Don't believe me?

Try sending two emails to any Gmail address, one with and one without a period (or periods, as the case may be).

They'll both end up in the same inbox.

You can also add a + and then whatever you want after your username before the @ and still get it.
You can even filter your inbox based on what is after the +. Sometimes it makes it easy to see who sold your email to some spam list.
