Who painted this?

Answer here.

Fooled me, that's for sure: at first I thought it might have been painted by Le Douanier (Henri Rousseau).

Just goes to show that a painter's style can change radically from age twenty-four.

"Mademoiselle Sicot," an 1865 oil on canvas, 35.25"W x 45.75"H, is in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Nilometer

Nilometer 2

This Nilometer is located on Roda Island in central Cairo.

It dates back to 861 C.E., when the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil ordered its construction, overseen by the astronomer Al-Farghani.

It was built on a site occupied by an earlier version.

The design comprises flights of marble stairs leading down into the river, with depth markings along the walls.

It was used for recording Nile flood height for over 1,000 years, until 1902.

Shades of M.C. Escher.
