Beetle demonstrates alternative approach to exiting a frog

YouTube caption: The aquatic beetle Regimbartia attenuata can actively escape from the vent of the frog Pelophylax nigromaculatus via the digestive system. This beetle species may promote frog excretion to facilitate its escape."

Back... ahem... story here.

The abstract of the scientific paper featuring this novel way out, entitled "Active escape of prey from predator vent via the digestive tract," is here.

Wait a sec... what's that music

I'm hearing?

BehindTheMedspeak: COVID-19 is the disease that keeps on giving

IMG_0944

Consider, if you will, the following:

This paper, published on August 3, titled "Cerebral Micro-Structural Changes in COVID-19 Patients — An MRI-based 3-month Follow-up Study," found neurological symptoms in 55% of otherwise recovered COVID-19 patients.

This paper, published on July 27, titled "Outcomes of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients Recently Recovered from COVID-19," found cardiac involvement in 78 patients (78%) and ongoing myocardial inflammation in 60 patients (60%).

This paper, published on July 9, titled "Persistent Symptoms in Patients After Acute COVID-19," found that 87% of patients discharged from hospitals reported persistence of of at least one symptom, most often fatigue and shortness of breath.

All my reading on COVID-19 — trust me, it's a lot — has led me to the conclusion that not only is it extremely contagious, but also that more likely than not, should I become sick with it — being, at the age of 72, a happy resident of Geriatric Park — I stand a fair chance of becoming quite sick, with a downturn in the quality of the rest of my life, assuming, of course, that I even survive the infection.

I know no one who's as strict as I am.

Since March 15, I have been to the following indoor places, masked and eye-protected (groceries since then have been curbside pickup: I haven't entered a big grocery store):

• Specialty grocery store x 2

• Oral surgeon for tooth extractions (1 visit) and 1 week follow-up (2nd visit)

That's it.

No one other than Gray Cat or myself has been in my house since March 15.

Nor do we anticipate any visitors.

One more thing: Gray Cat fans will be delighted to learn that two days after multiple tooth extractions under general anesthesia, she's fully recovered and perky as can be, enjoying a soft diet for the next week.

I took the pix above yesterday morning; surgery was Tuesday morning.

What is it?

Servus Jake!

Answer here this time tomorrow.

Hint: smaller than a bread box.

Another: Not a kitchen utensil.

A third: not what Anthony Hopkins wore in "Silence of the Lambs."
