How You Will Die

Screen Shot 2020-09-11 at 9.59.54 AM

Wrote Nathan Yau:

Enter your sex, race, and age.

Each dot represents one of your simulated lives, and as each year passes, more of your simulated selves pass away.

Color corresponds to cause of death, and the bars on the right keep track of the cumulative percentages.

By the end, you're left with the chances that you will die of each cause.

Refreshing.

Denver Airport's Talking Gargoyle

It says it's 243 years old.

Doesn't look a day over 100 to me.

Tell you what, this has clif's fingerprints all over it.

Who knows, he might even give us the back story.

My battle with "Ulysses" is over

"Ulysses" won, in a knockout — literally.

Every time I sat down to read this wonderful, impossibly difficult book — the hardest book I've ever read in its entirety — I would find myself getting sleepy and fighting to continue reading.

Constant readers will have followed my progress since I started it toward the end of August.

Two things.

1) If I'd been assigned to read this book in school, and then had to study for a test or write a paper on it, I'd have been miserable, first because of having to read it, then because of having to study it or write about it.

What a difference for me when I don't have to do something.

2) Elaborating on 1) above, I hated being assigned to write things from elementary school all the way through college.

And one of the few redeeming features of medical school was that I never had to write anything (except progress notes).

Yet here I am, well into year seventeen (17!) of boj, and I've enjoyed pretty much every minute I've spent creating it.

I just really hate having to do stuff.
