Only God can make a tree
Map shows the area of virgin old-growth forest in the contiguous United States in 1620, 1850, and 1920.
Wait a sec — what's that poem I'm hearing in my head?

The trick is virgin old growth. So what, a hardwood tree 50 years old is ancient, most trees don't make that. So a tree starting in 1970 is an ancient grandfather in the forest. The east coast has more trees now than 100 years ago as farms have disappeared. My grandfather made a living cutting trees for firewood and hauling it into the city by horse and wagon. Today looking at the same mountainside you can't tell it was cut.
