It says "discourages" swallowing, which is excellent, of course, but it makes me think a determined child might tough it out and gulp a couple down anyway, just for the hell of it. Like you do when you're young and not yet prone to contemplate disaster.

I was told the story, many, many times, by my parents who would've known, about the time when I was two that I managed to locate and drink an entire half-bottle of gin, and the ensuing pandemonium and frantic calls to the doctor and so on. ("Don't let her fall asleep, walk her around! She'll vomit most of it up." They did, and I did.) It seems like a kid would stop after a taste or two of such a pungent liquid as gin, but apparently I kept at it in my thorough investigation of new things. Kids.

Paul, my father burned his hands pretty bad because he had a habit of lighting a match with the cover still open in case he needed a second match. The matchbook went up and he couldn't just drop it because he was pushing my brother in a stroller.

I remember when the striker area on paper matchbooks was moved from the front of the book to the back. In the previous year, eight children had been killed by playing with matched. The inconvenience was deemed worthwhile.

Put a $1,000 deposit on small batteries, or execute the buyer/owner of a battery which kills a child. Might as well off the person in charge of that child also.
