Tiffany Dragonfly Lamp

SCAN0025

This "Dragonfly" table lamp, made in the Tiffany Studios in the early 20th century, is the most beautiful one I've seen.

Bronze, mosaic (note missing piece on the base's lower left), and leaded glass.

Private collection.

FunFact: By the 1920s and 1930s, Tiffany lamps were considered fussy and old-fashioned, and wealthy families would give them to their servants.

A dragonfly lamp from the collection of Andrew Carnegie sold for $2,110,000 at a Sotheby's auction in 2015.

You could look it up

By the way, that Dragonfly lamp that sold for $2.1 million, has just a cast base and not nearly as complex or beautiful as this one.

I would love to know how many man-hours went into making that lamp. It looks like at least some of the glass in the base is curved. All the pieces cut and shaped by hand. The metal work cast, and the pieces assembled. Today you may pay more for a fancy bulb than that lamp cost new.
